Sunan Ibn Majah 2800 (Book 24, Hadith 48) #32154
The Martyr's Request and Allah's Response

SUMMARY: This hadith narrates the story of a man who was killed in battle and asked Allah to bring him back to life so he could be killed for His sake again. Allah told him that it was not possible, but He would convey the good news about his state to those he left behind.

It was narrated from Jabir bin 'Abdullah: "When 'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Haram was killed, on the Day of Uhud, the Messenger of Allah said: 'O Jabir, shall I not tell you what Allah said to your father?’ I said: 'Yes.’ He said: 'Allah does not speak to anyone except from behind a screen, but He spoke to your father face to face and said: "O My slave, ask Me and I shall give you". He said: "O my Lord, bring me back to life so that I may be killed for Your sake a second time". He said: "I have already decreed that they will not return (to the world after death)". He said: "O Lord, convey (the good news about my state) to those whom I have left behind". So Allah revealed this Verse: 'Think not of those as dead who are killed in the way of Allah.’"3:169

QUICK LESSONS:
Have faith in God's decree even when we don't understand why something has happened or why something has been denied from us . Be willing to sacrifice our lives for God’s cause .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us about a man named Abdullah bin Amr bin Haram who was martyred on the Day of Uhud. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asked Jabir if he wanted to know what Allah said to his father. When Jabir agreed, the Prophet ﷺ told him that Allah spoke directly with Abdullah and said "O My slave, ask Me and I shall give you." Abdullah then asked for permission from Allah to be brought back so he could be martyred again for His sake. However, this request was denied as it is not possible for anyone to return after death. Instead, Allah promised that He would convey good news about his state of being in Paradise to those whom he left behind on Earth. This promise is recorded in Surat Al-Imran verse 169 which states “Think not of those as dead who are killed in the way of Allah” .This hadith teaches us many values such as sacrifice, faithfulness and trust in God’s decree even when we don't understand why something has happened or why something has been denied from us . It also shows us how much reward awaits those who are willing to sacrifice their lives for God’s cause .
