Sunan Ibn Majah 2598 (Book 20, Hadith 66) #31952
Waiving Legal Punishment for Coerced Women

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a woman who was coerced and the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) waived the legal punishment for her and carried it out on the one who had attacked her.

It was narrated from 'Abdul Jabbar bin Wa'il that his father said: "A Woman was coerced (ie, raped) during the time of Messenger of Allah He waived the legal punishment for her and carried it out on the one who had attacked her, but he (the narrator) did not say that he rules that she should be given a bridal-money".

QUICK LESSONS:
Show mercy towards those who have been wronged , Treat them with kindness and compassion regardless of their circumstances .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of an incident that occurred during the time of Prophet Muhammad's life, in which a woman was coerced or raped. Instead of punishing her, he waived any legal punishment and instead punished the attacker. He also did not rule that she should be given bridal money, which is usually given to women upon marriage as a sign of respect and appreciation. This hadith teaches us to show mercy towards those who have been wronged, even if they are guilty in some way, as well as to punish those who commit wrongdoings instead of punishing their victims. It also teaches us that we should not expect anything from someone just because they have been wronged; rather we should treat them with kindness and compassion regardless of their circumstances.
