Jabir bin 'Abdullah was heard to say: "We used to sell our slave women and the mothers of our children (Umahat Awaldina) when the Prophet ﷺ was still living among us, and we did not see anything wrong with that".
Islam also encourages freeing slaves as an act of charity which will be rewarded by Allah on the Day Of Judgment. Therefore, we should strive to free those who are enslaved if we can afford it or help them in any way possible so they can gain their freedom from oppression.
This hadith reminds us that although certain practices may have been accepted during a certain period in history, this does not necessarily make them right or acceptable according to Islamic teachings today. We must always strive for justice and fairness for all people regardless of their race or religion if we want to live according to Islamic principles today.
