Sunan Ibn Majah 2470 (Book 16, Hadith 35) #31822
Following the Prophet's Thoughts and Opinions

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ warned people against following his thoughts and opinions, as they may be wrong, but he promised to never lie about Allah (SWT).

It was narrated from Simak that the heard Musa bin Talhah bin 'Ubaidullah narrating that his father said: "I passed by some palm trees with the Messenger of Allah and he saw some people pollinating the trees. He said: 'What are these people doing?' They said: 'They are taking something from the male part (of the plant) and putting it in the female part'. He said: 'I do not think that this will do any good'. News of that reached them, so they stopped doing it, and their yield declined. News of that reached the Prophet and he said: 'That was only my thought. If it will do any good, then do it. I am only a human being like you, and what I think may be right or wrong. But When I tell you: "Allah (SWT) says," I will never tell lies about Allah (SWT)'. "

QUICK LESSONS:
Think for oneself before blindly following someone else’s opinion
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of not blindly following the thoughts and opinions of others. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was passing by some palm trees when he saw people pollinating them. He expressed his opinion that this would not do any good. However, news of this reached them and they stopped doing it, resulting in a decline in their yield. When news of this reached the prophet ﷺ again, he reminded everyone that he is only human like them and his thoughts may be right or wrong. He then promised to never lie when speaking on behalf of Allah SWT. This hadith teaches us to think for ourselves instead of blindly following what others say or think without questioning it first. We should also remember that we should always trust what comes from Allah SWT over our own opinions or those from other humans as we can make mistakes but God will never lead us astray with His words.
