Sunan Ibn Majah 2442 (Book 16, Hadith 7) #31794
Opposing Those Who Break Promises

SUMMARY: Allah will oppose those who make promises in His name and break them, sell a free man and consume his price, or hire a worker and not pay him.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said: (Allah (SWT) says:) "I am the opponent of three on the Day of Resurrection, and if I am someone's opponent I will defeat him: A man who makes promises in My Name, then proves treacherous; a man who sells a free man and consumes his price; and a man who hires a worker, makes use to him, then does not give him his wages".

QUICK LESSONS:
Keep your promises made in God’s Name; Pay workers according to agreement; Do not take advantage from slaves or workers

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of keeping one's promises. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that Allah will be an opponent to three types of people on the Day of Judgment. The first type are those who make promises in Allah's name but then break them. This means that if someone makes a promise to another person in the name of God, they must keep it no matter what because breaking it would be displeasing to God. The second type are those who sell a free man and consume his price; this means that if someone sells another person into slavery, they should not take advantage of them by taking their money or possessions for themselves instead of giving it back to the slave owner as agreed upon. Finally, the third type are those who hire workers but do not give them their wages; this means that employers should always pay their employees for their work according to what was agreed upon between both parties. All these actions go against Islamic teachings and values which emphasize honesty, justice, fairness, and kindness towards others.
