Sunan Ibn Majah 2207 (Book 12, Hadith 71) #31559
The Consequences of Selfishness

SUMMARY: Allah will not speak to, look at, or purify those who are selfish and do not help others in need.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said: "There are three to whom Allah will not speak on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He look at them or purify them, and theirs will be a painful torment: A man who has surplus water in the desert but refuses to give any to a wayfarer; a man who sells a product to a man after 'Asr and swears by Allah that he bought it for such and such amount, and he believes him, when that is not the case; and a man who swears allegiance to a ruler, and only does so for worldly gains, so if he gives him some of (these worldly benefits) he fulfills his oath of allegiance, and if he is not given anything he does not uphold his oath of allegiance".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous with your resources, Be honest with your words, Help others in need

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the consequences of being selfish. It was narrated by Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said that there are three people who will be punished on the Day of Resurrection for their selfish behavior. The first person is someone who has surplus water in a desert but refuses to give any to a wayfarer. The second person is someone who sells a product after 'Asr and swears by Allah that he bought it for such and such amount when it isn't true. Lastly, the third person is someone who swears allegiance to a ruler only for worldly gains; if they get something from them they fulfill their oath but if they don't get anything then they don't uphold their oath. These people will be punished because Allah does not like those who are selfish and do not help others in need. We should always strive to be generous with our resources and honest with our words so we can avoid this punishment on Judgment Day.
