Prohibiting Earnest Money Deals

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ forbade the deal involving earnest money.

It was narrated from 'Amr bin Shu'aib, from his father, from his grandfather that : the Prophet forbade the deal involving earnest money .
حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ بَلَغَنِي عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ـ ـ نَهَى عَنْ بَيْعِ الْعُرْبَانِ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the prohibition of a certain type of deal known as al-mua’wada. This type of deal involves an earnest money payment which is known as al-rasam. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ forbade this kind of transaction and it is considered to be prohibited or mamnoo’ in Islamic law. This hadith teaches us that we should not engage in any kind of transaction that involves paying an earnest money payment as it is forbidden by the Prophet ﷺ. We should also strive to abide by Islamic laws and teachings when engaging in any kind of business or financial transactions.
