Sunan Ibn Majah 2125 (Book 11, Hadith 36) #31477
Vows of Disobedience

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that it is not permissible to make a vow to do something sinful, and the expiation for such a vow is the same as for breaking an oath.

It was narrated from 'Aishah that the Messenger of Allah said: "There is no vow to commit disobedience, and the expiation (for such a vow) is the expiation for breaking an oath".

QUICK LESSONS:
Make vows only when necessary; keep your promises; avoid sinfulness; seek forgiveness from Allah when needed; fulfill your obligations even if difficult at times .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that it is not permissible to make a vow or promise to do something sinful. Making such a vow would be considered disobedience and would require an expiation, which in this case is the same as for breaking an oath. An oath or pledge can be made in many different ways, including verbally or through writing. It could also involve making a promise with Allah or another person. In any case, if someone makes a pledge of disobedience then they must repent and seek forgiveness from Allah by performing the prescribed expiation. This hadith also serves as reminder that we should always strive to keep our promises and fulfill our obligations, even if they are difficult at times.
