Making Vows for Things Beyond Our Control

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that one should not make a vow to do something that is not in their control.

It was narrated from 'Imran bin Husain that the Messenger of Allah said: "There is no vow to commit disobedience and no vow concerning that which the son of Adam does not possess".

QUICK LESSONS:
Make honest promises you can keep; Make sure your promises are within your power; Be responsible with your words; Keep your commitments; Be mindful of what you promise others.

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, taught us an important lesson about making vows. He said that we should not make a vow to do something that is beyond our control or something that we cannot do. This means we should not promise to do things like breaking the law or doing something bad because it is out of our power and ability to fulfill such promises. We can only make vows for things within our power and ability, such as helping others or being kinder and more generous with our time and resources. This teaches us the importance of being honest with ourselves and others when making promises so as to avoid disappointment in the future.
