Sunan Ibn Majah 2114 (Book 11, Hadith 25) #31466
The Sin of Insisting on Wrongful Oaths

SUMMARY: It is more sinful to insist on fulfilling an oath that is wrong than to break it and pay the expiation.

It was narrated that Hammam heard Abu Hurairah saying that 'Abul-Qasim said: "If anyone of you insists on fulfilling what he swore to (after learning that it is wrong) then it is more sinful before Allah than (breaking the oath for which) the expiation that has been enjoined upon him".

QUICK LESSONS:
Think carefully before making any promises; Be honest with yourself if you make a mistake; Pay your due expiations; Avoid sinning further by insisting on fulfilling a wrongful vow/oath/promise.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the importance of being mindful when making an oath or promise. If one finds out that their oath was wrong, they should not insist on fulfilling it as this would be more sinful before Allah than breaking the oath and paying the expiation for it. The expiation for breaking an oath is usually fasting three days or feeding ten poor people, but this may vary depending on what was promised in the original oath. This hadith reminds us to think carefully before making any promises and to be honest with ourselves if we realize we have made a mistake in our promise so that we can avoid sinning further by insisting on fulfilling it.
