Sahih al-Bukhari 316 (Book 6, Hadith 21) #313
Performing Hajj and Umrah Despite Menses

SUMMARY: This hadith is about how Aisha was able to perform Hajj and Umrah despite her menses, by postponing the Umrah and performing it later.

Narrated 'Aisha: In the last Hajj of Allah's Messenger I assumed the Ihram for Hajj along with Allah Apostle. I was one of those who intended Tamattu' (to perform Hajj and 'Umra) and did not take the Hadi (animal for sacrifice) with me. I got my menses and was not clean till the night of 'Arafa I said, "O Allah's Apostle! It is the night of the day of 'Arafat and I intended to perform the Hajj Tamattu' with 'Umra. Allah's Messenger told me to undo my hair and comb it and to postpone the 'Umra. I did the same and completed the Hajj. On the night of Al-Hasba (ie place outside Mecca where the pilgrims go after finishing all the ceremonies of Hajj at Mina) he (the Prophet) ordered 'Abdur Rahman ('Aisha's brother) to take me to at-Tan'im to assume the Ihram for 'Umra in lieu of that of Hajj-at-Tamattu' which I had intended to perform.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow instructions from Allah's Messenger ﷺ without hesitation or doubt. Find ways around obstacles in religious duties with patience.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how Aisha was able to perform both the pilgrimage of Hajj and the lesser pilgrimage of Umrah despite her menses. The Prophet Muhammad instructed her to undo her hair, comb it, and postpone the 'Umra until she was clean again. After completing the rituals of Hajj at Mina, he ordered Abdur Rahman to take Aisha to at-Tan'im so that she could assume Ihram for 'Umra in lieu of that of Hajj-at-Tamattu'. This hadith teaches us that even if we face obstacles in our religious duties due to physical or other reasons, we should not give up but find a way around them with patience. It also shows us how important it is for us as Muslims to follow instructions from Allah's Messenger ﷺ without hesitation or doubt.
