Fasting According to the Prophet Muhammad

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's response to Umar bin Khattab's questions regarding fasting.

It was narrated that Abu Qatadah said: "Umar bin Khattab said: 'O Messenger of Allah! What about a person who fasts two days and does not fast one day?’ He said: 'Is anyone able to do that?’ He said: 'O Messenger of Allah! What about a person who fasts one day and not the next?’ He said: 'That is the fast of Dawud.’ He said: 'What about a man who fasts one day and does not fast the next two days?’ He said: 'I wish that I were given the ability to do that.’"

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's response to Umar bin Khattab's questions regarding fasting. Umar asked what would happen if someone fasted two days and not one, or one day and not two. The Prophet responded that it was difficult for anyone to do this, but he wished he could do it himself. This hadith teaches us that fasting should be done regularly and consistently in order for it to be beneficial. It also shows us that even though the Prophet was a great leader, he still wished for more strength and ability in order to fulfill his religious obligations. We can learn from this example that we should strive for excellence in our own religious practices as well as our daily lives.
