The Praiseworthy Fast and Prayer of Prophet Dawud (AS)

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) praised the fasting and prayer of Prophet Dawud (AS).

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr that the Messenger of Allah said: "The most beloved fast to Allah is the fast of Dawud, for he used to fast one day and not the next. And the most beloved of prayer to Allah is the prayer of Dawud; he used to sleep half of the night, pray one-third of the night and sleep one-sixth of the night".
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ الشَّافِعِيُّ، إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْعَبَّاسِ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَمْرَو بْنَ أَوْسٍ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو يَقُولُ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ ـ ‏ "‏ أَحَبُّ الصِّيَامِ إِلَى اللَّهِ صِيَامُ دَاوُدَ. كَانَ يَصُومُ يَوْمًا وَيُفْطِرُ يَوْمًا. وَأَحَبُّ الصَّلاَةِ إِلَى اللَّهِ صَلاَةُ دَاوُدَ. كَانَ يَنَامُ نِصْفَ اللَّيْلِ وَيُصَلِّي ثُلُثَهُ وَيَنَامُ سُدُسَهُ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the fasting and prayer of Prophet Dawud. According to the hadith narrated by Abdullah bin 'Amr from the Messenger of Allah, it is said that the most beloved fast to Allah is that of Prophet Dawud. He used to fast one day and not on another day. Similarly, his prayer was also praised by the Messenger of Allah as being most beloved to God. It is said that he used to sleep half a night and pray for one-third part while sleeping for one-sixth part. This hadith teaches us about how important it is for us Muslims to be consistent in our worship towards God Almighty. We should strive hard in order to make our prayers more meaningful and sincere so that we can please Him with our devotion towards Him. Moreover, this hadith also encourages us Muslims to be regular in our fasting as well so that we can reap its rewards both in this world as well as hereafter.
