Fasting Days of the Prophet Muhammad

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) fasted for twenty-nine days in some months, and for thirty days in others.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "(The months in which) We fasted twenty-nine days at the time of the Messenger of Allah , were more than (the months in which) we fasted thirty days.
حَدَّثَنَا مُجَاهِدُ بْنُ مُوسَى، حَدَّثَنَا الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ الْمُزَنِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا الْجُرَيْرِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي نَضْرَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: مَا صُمْنَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ـ ـ تِسْعًا وَعِشْرِينَ أَكْثَرُ مِمَّا صُمْنَا ثَلاَثِينَ

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah states that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to fast for different lengths of time during different months. In some months, he would fast for twenty-nine days, while in other months he would fast for thirty days. This hadith serves as an example to Muslims of how they should strive to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad and emulate his actions. It also teaches us that fasting is an important part of our faith and should not be taken lightly or neglected. Furthermore, it encourages us to take advantage of every opportunity we have to do good deeds and increase our piety.
