Sunan Ibn Majah 1528 (Book 6, Hadith 96) #30880
Informing the Prophet of Death

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ was disturbed when he found out about a woman's death and he taught his companions to inform him of any death in the community so that he can pray for them.

Kharijah bin Zaid bin Thabit narrated that Yazid bin Thabit, who was older than Zaid, said: "We went out with the Prophet and when we reached Al-Baqi’, we saw a new grave. He asked about it and they said: '(It is) so-and-so (a woman).’ He recognized the name and said: 'Why did you not tell me about her?’ They said: 'You were taking a nap and you were fasting, and we did not like to disturb you.’ He said: 'Do not do that; I do not want to see it happen again that one of you dies, while I am still among you, and you do not tell me, for my prayer for him is a mercy.’ Then he went to the grave and we lined up in rows behind him, and he said four Takbir (ie for the funeral prayer)".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about informing the Prophet (ﷺ) of any deaths in the community. When the Prophet (ﷺ) found out about a woman's death, he was disturbed and asked why they did not tell him earlier. He then taught his companions to always inform him if someone dies so that he can pray for them as it is a mercy from Allah. He then went to her grave and prayed four Takbirs for her funeral prayer. This hadith teaches us that we should always be considerate towards others, especially those who are grieving, and inform our leaders or religious figures if someone passes away so they can offer their prayers for them. It also teaches us to be respectful towards those who have passed away by offering our prayers for them as it is an act of mercy from Allah.
