Sahih al-Bukhari 3140 (Book 57, Hadith 48) #3002
Equality of Kin in Islam

SUMMARY: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) gave a share to Bani Al-Muttalib and said that they are the same as Bani Hashim, but did not give a share to Bani 'Abd Shams and Bani Naufai.

Narrated Jubair bin Mut'im: I and 'Uthman bin 'Affan went to Allah's Messenger and said, "O Allah's Messenger ! You have given to Bani Al-Muttalib and left us although they and we are of the same kinship to you". Allah's Messenger said, "Bani Muttalib and Bani Hashim are one and the same". The Prophet did not give a share to Bani 'Abd Shams and Bani Naufai. (Ibn 'Is-haq said, "Abd Shams and Hashim and Al-Muttalib were maternal brothers and their mother was 'Atika bint Murra and Naufal was their paternal brother)

QUICK LESSONS:
Treat your kin equally regardless of whether you're related through your father or mother side
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of equality among kin in Islam. It was narrated by Jubair bin Mut'im and 'Uthman bin 'Affan, who went to Allah's Messenger ﷺ asking why he had given a share to Bani Al-Muttalib but not them. The Prophet ﷺ replied that they were all one family, as both groups were related through their mother Atika bint Murra. He then explained that he did not give a share to Bani Abd Shams or Naufai because they were paternal brothers instead of maternal brothers like the other two groups. This hadith teaches us that we should treat our kin equally regardless of whether we are related through our father or mother side, as all family members should be treated with respect and kindness.
