Sahih al-Bukhari 30 (Book 2, Hadith 23) #30
Kindness to Slaves

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) taught Abu Dhar that slaves are brothers and should be treated with kindness, respect, and compassion.

Narrated Al-Ma'rur: At Ar-Rabadha I met Abu Dhar who was wearing a cloak, and his slave, too, was wearing a similar one. I asked about the reason for it. He replied, "I abused a person by calling his mother with bad names". The Prophet said to me, 'O Abu Dhar! Did you abuse him by calling his mother with bad names You still have some characteristics of ignorance. Your slaves are your brothers and Allah has put them under your command. So whoever has a brother under his command should feed him of what he eats and dress him of what he wears. Do not ask them (slaves) to do things beyond their capacity (power) and if you do so, then help them'. "

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of treating slaves with kindness, respect, and compassion. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was teaching Abu Dhar a lesson when he saw him wearing a cloak similar to his slave's. He asked why this was so and Abu Dhar replied that he had abused someone by calling their mother bad names. In response, the Prophet reminded him that slaves are brothers in Islam and should be treated as such. He advised Abu Dhar to feed them from what he eats himself and dress them in what he wears himself. He also warned against asking them to do things beyond their capacity or strength without helping them out if they do so. This hadith teaches us the importance of treating our fellow human beings with kindness regardless of their social status or position in life.
