The Importance of Ablution

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of performing ablution when there is an odor or sound.

It was narrated that 'Amr bin 'Ata' said: "I saw Sa'ib bin Yazid sniffing his garment, and I said: 'Why (are you doing) that?' He said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah say: "No ablution (is needed) unless there is an odor or a sound".
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَطَاءٍ، قَالَ رَأَيْتُ السَّائِبَ بْنَ يَزِيدَ يَشَمُّ ثَوْبَهُ فَقُلْتُ مِمَّ ذَلِكَ قَالَ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ ـ يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ لاَ وُضُوءَ إِلاَّ مِنْ رِيحٍ أَوْ سَمَاعٍ
