Jami at-Tirmidhi 3837 (Book 49, Hadith 237) #29499
The Benefits of Humility and Generosity

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of being humble and generous, and how it can lead to greater knowledge.

Narrated Malik bin Abi 'Amir: "A man came to Talhah bin 'Ubaidullah and said: 'O Abu Muhammad, do you see this Yemeni - meaning: Abu Hurairah - is he more knowledgeable of the Ahadith of the Messenger of Allah than you? We hear from him what we do not hear from you, or does he attribute to the Messenger of Allah what he did not say?' He said: 'As for his having heard from the Messenger of Allah what we did not hear from him, then that is because he was poor, having nothing, a guest of the Messenger of Allah , his hand was in the hand of the Messenger of Allah . And we used to be people of houses and wealth, and we used to come to the Messenger of Allah at the two ends of the day. I do not doubt that he heard from the Messenger of Allah what we did not hear, and you will not find anyone in whom there is good attributing to the Messenger of Allah what he did not say'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Be humble & generous towards others . Seek knowledge from Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) . Respect people regardless of their wealth & power . Do not doubt or question people who have less wealth or power than you .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of humility and generosity. Talhah bin 'Ubaidullah was asked why Abu Hurairah was more knowledgeable than him, even though he was not as wealthy or powerful. Talhah replied that Abu Hurairah was poor, so he spent more time with the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which allowed him to learn more from him. This hadith teaches us that those who are humble and generous will be rewarded with knowledge. It also shows us that poverty should not be seen as a disadvantage; rather it can be a blessing in disguise if one uses it to seek knowledge from Allah's Messenger ﷺ. Furthermore, this hadith reminds us not to doubt or question people who have less wealth or power than us; instead we should respect them for their humility and generosity.
