Surprising Goodness in Unexpected Places

SUMMARY: The Prophet asked Abu Hurairah about his origin and was surprised to find out that he was from Daws, a tribe known for its bad reputation.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: "The Prophet said to me: 'Who are you from?' I said: 'From Daws'. He said: 'I did not used think there was anyone from Daws in whom there was good'."
حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ آدَمَ ابْنُ بِنْتِ أَزْهَرَ السَّمَّانِ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَارِثِ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَلْدَةَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْعَالِيَةِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ‏"‏ مِمَّنْ أَنْتَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ قُلْتُ مِنْ دَوْسٍ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ مَا كُنْتُ أُرَى أَنَّ فِي دَوْسٍ أَحَدًا فِيهِ خَيْرٌ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ غَرِيبٌ ‏.‏ وَأَبُو خَلْدَةَ اسْمُهُ خَالِدُ بْنُ دِينَارٍ وَأَبُو الْعَالِيَةِ اسْمُهُ رُفَيْعٌ
