Moderation in Spending

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of moderation and not being too extravagant in spending.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: 'Umar saw a silken cloak being sold in the market and he brought it to Allah's Messenger and said, "O Allah's Messenger ! Buy this cloak and adorn yourself with it on the 'Id festivals and on meeting the delegations". Allah's Messenger replied, "This is the dress for the one who will have no share in the Hereafter (or, this is worn by one who will have no share in the Hereafter)". After sometime had passed, Allah's Messenger sent a silken cloak to 'Umar'.Umar took it and brought it to Allah's Messenger and said, "O Allah's Messenger ! You have said that this is the dress of that who will have no share in the Hereafter (or, this is worn by one who will have no share in the Hereafter), yet you have sent me this!" The Prophet said," I have sent it) so that you may sell it or fulfill with it some of your needs".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be moderate with spending; use money wisely according to one's needs; spend responsibly.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of moderation and not being too extravagant in spending. It was narrated by Ibn 'Umar, who saw a silken cloak being sold in the market and suggested to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) that he should buy it for himself to wear on special occasions such as festivals or when meeting delegations. The Prophet (ﷺ) replied that this type of clothing was only for those who would have no share in the Hereafter, meaning those who are too indulgent with their wealth. Later on, however, he sent a similar cloak to Umar as a gift so that he could either sell it or use it for his own needs. This shows us that we should be moderate with our spending and not be overly extravagant with our wealth; instead we should use it wisely and responsibly according to our needs.
