Seeking Refuge from Unfavorable Qualities

SUMMARY: Seeking refuge from a heart that does not humble itself, an unheard supplication, an unsatisfied soul and knowledge that does not benefit.

'Abdullah bin 'Amr narrated that: The Messenger of Allah used to say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from a heart that does not humble itself, and from a supplication that is not heard, and from a soul that is never satisfied, and from knowledge that does not benefit, I seek refuge in You from these four (Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min qalbin la yakhsha'u, wa min du'a’in la yusma'u, wa min nafsin la tashba'u, wa min 'ilmin la yanfa'u, a'udhu bika min ha’ula’il-arba')".

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek refuge in Allah SWT
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about seeking refuge from unfavorable qualities. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to seek refuge in Allah SWT from a heart that does not humble itself, an unheard supplication, an unsatisfied soul and knowledge that does not benefit. A humble heart is one which submits to the will of Allah SWT and acknowledges His greatness. An unanswered supplication is one which has been made but has yet to be answered by Allah SWT. An unsatisfied soul is one which never feels content with what it has been given by Allah SWT and always desires more than what it should have or need. Lastly, knowledge that does not benefit refers to knowledge which we have acquired but do nothing with it or use it for any good purpose such as helping others or spreading the word of Islam etc.. All these qualities are unfavorable because they lead us away from the path of righteousness and piety so we must seek refuge in Allah SWT from them all.
