Upholding Ties of Kinship

SUMMARY: The hadith is about upholding ties of kinship and being kind to the family of Prophet Muhammad.

Narrated Tawus: Ibn 'Abbas was asked about this Ayah: Say: "No reward do I ask of you for this except to be kind for my kinship with you (42:23)". So Sa'eed bin Jubair said: 'To be kind to the family of Muhammad'. Ibn 'Abbas replied: 'You know that there was no family of the Quraish except that the Messenger of Allah had some relatives among them'. He said: 'Except that you should uphold ties of kinship that exist between me and you'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about the importance of upholding ties of kinship and being kind to the family members. It was narrated by Tawus Ibn 'Abbas who said that when asked about a verse in Quran which says "Say: "No reward do I ask of you for this except to be kind for my kinship with you" he replied that it means one should be kind to the family members of Prophet Muhammad as he had relatives among them from all families in Quraish. Sa'eed bin Jubair also added that it means one should uphold ties with his/her relatives. This hadith teaches us how important it is to maintain good relationships with our family members and treat them kindly no matter what differences we have between us. It also shows us how Prophet Muhammad himself was so humble and caring towards his own relatives even though they were not believers at first but he still kept good relations with them out of kindness and mercy which is something we can learn from him too.
