Jami at-Tirmidhi 3101 (Book 47, Hadith 153) #28750
Seeking Forgiveness for Idolaters

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the Prophet (PBUH) receiving a revelation from Allah regarding seeking forgiveness for idolaters.

Narrated 'Ali: "I heard a man seeking forgiveness for his parents who were idolaters, so I said to him: 'You seek forgiveness for your parents while they are idolaters?' He said: 'Did Ibrahim not seek forgiveness for his father, and he was an idolater?' So I mentioned that to the Prophet and (the following) was revealed: It is not for the Prophet nor those who believe, that they should seek forgiveness for the idolaters (9:113)".

QUICK LESSONS:
Pray even if your loved ones are non-believers; Have faith in Allah; Believe in His teachings; Ask Him for guidance; Be accountable for your actions.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man who asked the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ if it was permissible to seek forgiveness for his parents who were idolaters. The man referred to Ibrahim's example of seeking forgiveness for his father even though he was an idolater. In response to this question, Allah revealed verse 9 of Surah At-Tawbah which states that it is not permissible for the Prophet or those who believe in him to seek forgiveness on behalf of those who are idolaters. This hadith teaches us that we should not ask Allah to forgive those who do not believe in Him and His teachings as they will be accountable on their own Day of Judgment. It also reminds us that we should never give up hope and keep praying even if our loved ones are non-believers as there may still be a chance that they will turn back towards faith and repentance before their death.
