Sahih al-Bukhari 3003 (Book 56, Hadith 212) #2872
The Gift of Allah

SUMMARY: One should not take back a gift given in the name of Allah, as it is considered to be like a dog swallowing its vomit.

Narrated Aslam: I heard 'Umar bin Al-Khattab saying, "I gave a horse to be ridden in Allah's Cause and the person who got it intended to sell it or neglected it. So, I wanted to buy it as I thought he would sell it cheap. I consulted the Prophet who said, "Do not buy it even if for one Dirham, because he who takes back his gift is like a dog swallowing its vomit".

QUICK LESSONS:
Give gifts generously for Allah's sake without expecting anything in return.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of giving gifts in the name of Allah. It teaches us that when we give something to someone in the name of God, we should not take it back. Taking back a gift given in the name of God is like a dog eating its own vomit, which is disgusting and shameful. We should always remember that whatever we give away for God's sake will be rewarded by Him and will bring us closer to Him. Therefore, it is important for us to think carefully before giving away anything for His sake and make sure that we do not take it back afterwards.
