The Virtue of Charity

SUMMARY: Umar bin Al-Khattab gave a horse to be ridden in Allah's Cause and then he found it being sold. He consulted the Prophet (ﷺ) who advised him not to buy it or take back his gift of charity.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar: 'Umar bin Al-Khattab gave a horse to be ridden in Allah's Cause and then he found it being sold. He intended to purchase it. So, he consulted Allah's Messenger who said, "Don't buy it and don't take back your gift of charity".

QUICK LESSONS:
Give out wealth with an open heart without expecting anything in return; Remember whatever you give away is ultimately owned by Allah SWT; Do not try reclaiming what you have given away as charity even if you find yourself in need later on down the line; Be generous and kind towards others; Make sacrifices for others' benefit; Have faith that all your good deeds will be rewarded by Allah SWT on Judgment Day .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the virtue of charity and generosity. It was narrated by Abdullah bin 'Umar, who reported that Umar bin Al-Khattab gave a horse to be ridden in Allah's Cause and then he found it being sold. He wanted to purchase it, so he consulted the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for advice. The Prophet ﷺ advised him not to buy it or take back his gift of charity as this would go against the spirit of giving out of kindness and generosity without expecting anything in return. This hadith teaches us that we should give out our wealth with an open heart, without expecting any reward or recognition from people for our good deeds as this will bring us closer to Allah SWT and increase our rewards on Judgment Day. We should also remember that whatever we give away is ultimately owned by Allah SWT, so we should never try to reclaim what we have given away as charity even if we find ourselves in need later on down the line.
