Jami at-Tirmidhi 3055 (Book 47, Hadith 107) #28704
The Obligation of Hajj

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the obligation of Hajj and how it should not be done every year.

Narrated Abu Al-Bukhari: from 'Ali who said: "When (the following) was revealed: And Hajj to the House is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, for those who are able to undertake the journey (3:97). They said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Every year?' But he was silent. So they said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Every year?' He said: 'No. If I were to say yes, then it would be required'. And Allah, Mighty and Sublime is He, revealed O you who believe! Ask not about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble (5:101)".

QUICK LESSONS:
Obey Allah's commands by performing hajj if you are able to do so .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the obligation of performing Hajj, which is a pilgrimage to Makkah that Muslims must do at least once in their lifetime if they are able to. It was revealed in the Quran that mankind owes this duty to Allah, but when people asked if it should be done every year, Prophet Muhammad remained silent. Later on, Allah revealed a verse saying that people should not ask questions about things which may cause them trouble. This teaches us that we should only ask questions when we need clarification and not for curiosity's sake as it can lead us into trouble. We also learn from this hadith that even though performing Hajj is an obligation for Muslims who are able to do so, it does not have to be done every year.
