Jami at-Tirmidhi 3054 (Book 47, Hadith 106) #28703
Eating Lawfully & Moderation

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a man who was struggling with his desires and asked the Prophet for advice. The Prophet advised him to not make unlawful the good things which Allah has made lawful, and to eat of the things which Allah has provided for you, lawful and good.

Narrated 'Ikrimah: from Ibn 'Abbas: "A man came to the Prophet and said: 'O Messenger of Allah! When I consume meat and I get around women, my desires get the best of me. So I made meat unlawful for myself'. So Allah revealed: O you who believe! Make not unlawful the good things which Allah has made lawful to you, and transgress not. Verily Allah does not like the transgressors. And eat of the things which Allah has provided for you, lawful and good (5:87-88)".

QUICK LESSONS:
Consume food lawfully . Follow moderation . Respect limits set by God .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about moderation in eating and avoiding excessiveness. A man came to the Prophet asking for advice on how to control his desires when he consumes meat or gets around women. The Prophet advised him not to make unlawful what Allah has made lawful, such as food, but instead consume it in moderation. He also warned against transgressing by going beyond what is permissible or allowed by Allah. This hadith teaches us that we should be mindful of our actions and strive towards moderation in all aspects of life; whether it be eating, speaking or any other activity that we do in our daily lives. We should also remember that whatever Allah has made permissible for us should not be taken lightly; rather we must take care not to go beyond what is allowed by Him so as not to become transgressors ourselves.
