The Dangers of Lying and Speaking Without Knowledge

SUMMARY: This hadith warns against lying about the Prophet and speaking about the Quran without knowledge.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: that the Prophet said: "Beware of narrating from me except what I taught you, for whoever lies about me on purpose, then let him take his seat in the Fire. And whoever says (something) about the Qur'an according to his (own) opinion, then let him take his seat in the Fire".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith warns us against two very serious sins. Firstly, it is forbidden to lie about the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. If someone lies about him, they will be punished in the Fire on Judgment Day. Secondly, it is also forbidden to speak about the Quran without knowledge or understanding. We must not give our own opinion on what we think a verse means; instead, we should seek out scholars who can explain its true meaning to us. It is important that we take this warning seriously and strive to stay away from these sins so that we can be saved from punishment in the Hereafter.
