Patience in Times of Turmoil

SUMMARY: During times of turmoil, it is better to remain calm and patient. If someone tries to harm you, be as patient as Prophet Adam's son.

Busr bin Sa'eed said: During the Fitnah(in the time) of 'Uthman bin 'Affan, Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas said: "I testify that the Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) said: 'There will be a Fitnah during which the sitting person is better than the standing(person) is better than the walking, and the walking(person) is better than the running"'. He said: "What do you see(I should do) if he entered upon me in my home and extended hos hand to kill me? He said: 'Be as Adam's son"'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Remain calm and patient even in difficult situations

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of patience during times of turmoil or chaos. It was narrated by Busr bin Sa'eed who reported that during the fitnah or civil war in the time of Uthman bin 'Affan, Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas said that Prophet Muhammad(s.a.w) said that it is better for a person to remain sitting than standing, walking than running during such times. He then asked what he should do if someone entered his home and tried to kill him and he was advised to be as patient as Prophet Adam's son who showed great patience when his father asked him about why he ate from the forbidden tree despite being warned not to do so. This hadith teaches us that even in difficult situations we must remain calm and patient like Prophet Adam's son did instead of reacting impulsively or aggressively which can lead us into more trouble than good.
