Prohibiting Wearing Silk

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) prohibited wearing silk except for a small amount.

Narrated Suwaid bin Ghafalah: That 'Umar gave a Khutbah at Al-Jabiyah and he said: "The Messenger of Allah prohibited silk except for two finger's worth of space, or three, or four". Abu 'Eisa said: This Hadith is Hasan Sahih.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفَلَةَ، عَنْ عُمَرَ، أَنَّهُ خَطَبَ بِالْجَابِيَةِ فَقَالَ نَهَى نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ عَنِ الْحَرِيرِ إِلاَّ مَوْضِعَ أُصْبُعَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلاَثٍ أَوْ أَرْبَعٍ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ

This hadith is about the prohibition of wearing silk. It was narrated by Suwaid bin Ghafalah that Umar gave a Khutbah at Al-Jabiyah and said that the Messenger of Allah prohibited wearing silk except for two finger's worth of space or three or four. This hadith is considered to be Hasan Sahih which means it is reliable and authentic. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) wanted to prevent people from extravagance and luxury as these can lead to pride and arrogance. He also wanted people to focus on their spiritual life rather than materialistic things like clothing made out of expensive fabrics like silk. Therefore this hadith teaches us the importance of modesty and humility as well as avoiding extravagance and luxury items which can lead us away from our spiritual goals.
