Fulfilling Vows of Deceased Relatives

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ advised Sa'd bin 'Ubadah to fulfill the vow of his deceased mother.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: That Sa'd bin 'Ubadah asked the Messenger of Allah about a vow that was due from his mother, who died before fulfilling it. The Prophet said: "Fulfill it for her".
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنَّ سَعْدَ بْنَ عُبَادَةَ، اسْتَفْتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فِي نَذْرٍ كَانَ عَلَى أُمِّهِ تُوُفِّيَتْ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَقْضِيَهُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ‏ "‏ اقْضِهِ عَنْهَا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about fulfilling the vows of deceased relatives. It was narrated by Ibn 'Abbas that Sa'd bin 'Ubadah asked the Messenger of Allah about a vow that was due from his mother who died before fulfilling it. The Prophet advised him to fulfill it for her. This hadith teaches us that we should honor and respect our parents even after their death by fulfilling their promises and vows made in their lifetime. We should also remember them in our prayers and ask Allah to forgive them for any wrongdoings they may have committed during their lifetime. Furthermore, this hadith also teaches us to be mindful of our own promises and vows so as not to leave any unfinished business behind when we die ourselves one day.
