SUMMARY: No one should be punished more than ten lashes, except for legal punishments from Allah.

Narrated Abu Burdah bun Niyar: That the Messenger of Allah said: "No one is to be lashed more than ten lashes except for a legal punishment among Allah's punishments".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect the laws of Allah

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the limits of punishment that can be given to someone. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that no one should be punished with more than ten lashes, except for legal punishments from Allah. This means that if someone has done something wrong and needs to be punished, they should not receive more than ten lashes as a punishment. However, if the crime is serious enough and requires a harsher punishment according to Islamic law, then it is allowed for the person to receive more than ten lashes as a form of legal punishment from Allah. This hadith teaches us that we must respect the laws of Allah and not go beyond what He has prescribed in terms of punishments for crimes committed by people. It also teaches us mercy and compassion towards those who have done wrong; even though they may deserve harsher punishments according to Islamic law, we must still remember that mercy is an important part of our faith and strive to show it whenever possible.
