The Importance of Not Introducing New Matters in Prayer

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of not introducing new matters in prayer, as it was not practiced by the Prophet Muhammad (S) and his four successors.

Abu Malik Al-Ashjai narrated: "I said to my father: 'O my father! You offered Salat behind Allah's Messenger (S), Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali bin Abi Talib here in Al-Kufah for about five years. Did they say the Qunut?' He said: 'It is a newly invented matter my son'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is narrated by Abu Malik Al-Ashjai, who asked his father about whether they said the Qunut during their prayers behind Prophet Muhammad and his four successors. His father replied that it was a newly invented matter and should not be done. This hadith emphasizes the importance of adhering to tradition when it comes to prayer, as any new matters introduced are considered innovations or bid’ah which are discouraged in Islam. It is important for Muslims to follow the example set by Prophet Muhammad and his four successors when performing salat, as this will ensure that their prayers are accepted by Allah. The teachings found in this hadith remind us that we should always strive to stay true to our faith and practice what has been taught by our beloved Prophet Muhammad instead of introducing new matters into our worship which may be seen as innovations or bid’ah.
