Sunan Abi Dawud 4875 (Book 43, Hadith 103) #25166
Imitating Others is Wrong

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) taught that it is wrong to imitate anyone, even if it may bring some benefit.

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: I said to the Prophet : It is enough for you in Safiyyah that she is such and such (the other version than Musaddad's has:) meaning that she was short-statured. He replied; You have said a word which would change the sea if it were mixed in it. She said: I imitated a man before him (out of disgrace). He said: I do not like that I imitate anyone even if I should get such and such.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect yourself and avoid imitating others .

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, narrated by Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) teaches us an important lesson about imitating others. He was speaking to Aisha and she said something which implied that Safiyyah was short-statured. The Prophet's response was powerful; he said that her words were so strong they could change the sea if they were mixed in it. He then went on to explain why he did not like imitation of anyone else even if there would be some benefit from doing so. This hadith teaches us that we should not imitate others as it goes against Islamic teachings and values. We should instead strive to be our own person and make our own decisions based on what we believe is right or wrong according to Islamic teachings and values.
