Sahih al-Bukhari 2623 (Book 51, Hadith 55) #2509
The Consequences of Taking Back Charity

SUMMARY: Taking back what was given in charity is not allowed and is considered to be a bad act.

Narrated 'Umar bin Al-Khattab: I gave a horse in Allah's Cause. The person to whom it was given, did not look after it. I intended to buy it from him, thinking that he would sell it cheap. When I asked the Prophet he said, "Don't buy it, even if he gives it to you for one Dirham, as the person who takes back what he has given in charity, is like a dog that swallows back its vomit".

QUICK LESSONS:
Give generously without expecting anything in return .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of giving charity and how it should not be taken back. It was narrated by 'Umar bin Al-Khattab that he gave a horse in Allah's cause but the person to whom it was given did not look after it. He wanted to buy it from him thinking that he would sell it cheap, however when he asked the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ about this, he said that even if the person gives him for one Dirham, he should not take it back as taking back what you have given in charity is like a dog swallowing its vomit which is an unpleasant sight. This hadith teaches us that we should give generously without expecting anything in return and we should never take back what we have given away as charity. We must also remember that whatever good deeds we do will be rewarded by Allah SWT and our rewards will never decrease no matter how small or big our deeds are.
