In this hadith, 'Awf recounts a story in which al-Hajjaj compares the Prophet Uthman to Jesus son of Mary. He then recites a verse from the Quran that speaks about Allah's promise to clear Jesus from those who blaspheme him. Al-Hajjaj was making a sign with his hand both towards 'Awf and the people of Syria, indicating that this same promise applies to Prophet Uthman as well.
