Sunan Abi Dawud 4622 (Book 42, Hadith 27) #24913
Lying to Al-Hasan

SUMMARY: People have lied to al-Hasan by either believing in free will and publicizing it, or by having enmity with him.

Hammad said: I heard Ayyub say: Two kinds of people have lied to al-Hasan: people who believed in free will and they intended that they publicize their belief by it; and people who had enmity with and hostility (for al-Hasan), saying: Did he not say so and so? Did he not say so and so?

QUICK LESSONS:
Do not lie for any reason even if you disagree with someone's beliefs or have a personal vendetta against them .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how people have lied to al-Hasan, either by believing in free will and publicizing it, or by having enmity with him. The first group of people believed that they could choose their own destiny without any divine intervention, so they tried to spread this belief through lies about al-Hasan. The second group of people had a personal grudge against al-Hasan and used lies as a way of attacking him. This hadith teaches us that we should not lie for any reason, even if we disagree with someone's beliefs or have a personal vendetta against them. We should also be careful not to spread false information about others out of our own beliefs or biases.
