Sunan Abi Dawud 4600 (Book 42, Hadith 5) #24891
Seeking Forgiveness After Mistakes

SUMMARY: The hadith is about Ka'b b. Malik, who was forbidden to speak to the Muslims due to his mistake of not joining the Prophet ﷺ in the campaign of Tabuk. After a long period of time, he went to his cousin Abu Qatadah's garden and asked for forgiveness.

'Abd Allah b. Ka'b b. Malik who used to lead his father from among his sons when he became blind, said: I heard Ka'b b. Malik - the transmitter Ibn al-Sarh then narrated the story of his remaining behind from the Prophet during the campaign of Tabuk - say: The Messenger of Allah forbade the Muslims to speak to any of us three. When (in this state) abundant time passed on me, I ascended the wall of the garden of Abu Qatadah who was my cousin. I saluted him, but, I swear by Allah, he did not return salute to me. He then narrated the story of the revelation of the Qur’anic verses relating to his repentance.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about Ka'b b. Malik who made a mistake by not joining the Prophet in the campaign of Tabuk and was consequently forbidden from speaking with other Muslims for an extended period of time. He eventually decided to go visit his cousin Abu Qatadah's garden and ask for forgiveness from him as well as God Almighty. This story teaches us that no matter how big our mistakes are or how long we have been away from seeking repentance or forgiveness; it is never too late to turn back towards God Almighty and seek His mercy and forgiveness through sincere repentance and patience in waiting for His response. It also teaches us that even if people around us do not forgive us right away or respond positively towards our efforts; we should still continue on our path with patience until we receive God's mercy which will come eventually if we remain steadfast on this path with sincerity in our hearts.
