Sunan Abi Dawud 4584 (Book 41, Hadith 91) #24875
Forgiveness in Retaliation

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a man who bit another man's hand and in retaliation, the other man lost one of his front teeth. The Prophet (PBUH) and Abu Bakr (RA) both decided not to impose any retaliation for the tooth.

Narrated Safwan b. Ya'la: On this father's authority, said: A servant of mine fought with a man and bit his hand and he drew away his hand. (One of) his front teeth fell out. So he came to the Prophet who imposed no retaliation for his tooth, saying: Do you intend that he leaves his hand in your mouth so that you crunch it like a male camel ? He said: Ibn Abi Mulaikah told me on the authority of his grandfather that Abu Bakr (ra) imposed no retaliation on him for it, saying: May his tooth go away!

QUICK LESSONS:
Show mercy and compassion towards others even if they have wronged you; choose forgiveness over revenge; do not retaliate with violence or anger; follow the example set by our beloved prophet (ﷺ) .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of an incident where a servant of Safwan b. Ya'la fought with another man and bit his hand, resulting in the other man losing one of his front teeth. When this incident was brought to the attention of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Abu Bakr RA, they both decided not to impose any retaliation for the tooth that was lost as a result of this altercation. This teaches us that even when we are wronged or hurt by someone else, it is important to forgive them instead of retaliating with violence or anger as it can lead to further harm or destruction on either side. It also shows us how merciful our beloved prophet ﷺ was towards others even when they did something wrong against him or those close to him; he always chose forgiveness over revenge which is an example we should all strive towards following in our lives today.
