Sunan Abi Dawud 4538 (Book 41, Hadith 45) #24829
Forgiveness and Refraining from Retaliation

SUMMARY: This hadith encourages people to forgive and refrain from taking revenge, even if the one who forgives is a woman.

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: The Prophet Said: The disputants should refrain from taking retaliation. The one who is nearer should forgive first and then the one who is next to him, even if (the one who forgives) were a woman. Abu Dawud said: I have been informed that forgiving by women in the case of murder is permissible if a woman were one of the heirs (of the slain). I have been told on the authority of Abu 'Ubaid about the meaning of the word yanhajizu, that is, they should refrain from retaliation.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith encourages people to forgive and refrain from taking revenge. It was narrated by Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin, that the Prophet said that those who are disputing should not take retaliation. He also said that the one who is nearer should forgive first and then the one who is next to him, even if it were a woman. Abu Dawud added that forgiving by women in cases of murder is permissible if a woman were one of the heirs of the slain. The word yanhajizu means they should refrain from retaliation. This hadith teaches us about forgiveness and how it can be used as an alternative to retaliation or revenge in disputes between people. It also shows us how important it is for women to be included in matters such as these since they are just as capable of forgiving as men are.
