Sunan Abi Dawud 4401 (Book 40, Hadith 51) #24692
Actions of Lunatics Not Recorded

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the actions of a lunatic woman and how they are not recorded. It also mentions that the Prophet Muhammad said that there are three people whose actions are not recorded: a lunatic, a sleeper, and a boy until he reaches puberty.

Narrated Ali ibn AbuTalib: Ibn Abbas said: A lunatic woman passed by Ali ibn AbuTalib. He then mentioned the rest of the tradition to the same effect as Uthman mentioned. This version has: Do you not remember that the Messenger of Allah has said: There are three whose actions are not recorded: a lunatic whose mind is deranged till he is restored to consciousness, a sleeper till he awakes, and a boy till he reaches puberty?

QUICK LESSONS:
Be forgiving towards others when they make mistakes due to circumstances beyond their control; Strive to help those who need it so that we can prevent such situations from occurring in the first place;
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about how the actions of certain people are not recorded. According to Prophet Muhammad, these people include those who have gone mad or become lunatics, those who are asleep, and boys until they reach puberty. This means that if someone does something wrong while in one of these states then it will not be held against them as their minds were not in control at the time. This teaches us to be forgiving towards others when they make mistakes due to circumstances beyond their control. We should also strive to help those who need it so that we can prevent such situations from occurring in the first place.
