Punishment for Apostasy in Islam

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the punishment for those who change their religion and how it should be done according to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad.

'Ikrimah said: 'Ali burned some people who retreated from Islam. When Ibn 'Abbas was informed of it, he said: If it had been I, I would not have burned them, for the Messenger of Allah said: Do not inflict Allah’s punishment on anyone, but would have had killed them on account of the statement of the Messenger of Allah . The Apostle said: Kill those who change their religion. When 'Ali was informed about it he said: How truly Ibn 'Abbas said!

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the punishment for apostates or those who leave their religion. According to this hadith, Ibn 'Abbas said that if he were in charge of punishing apostates he would not have burned them as Allah's punishment should not be inflicted on anyone. Instead he would have killed them due to a statement from Prophet Muhammad which says that those who change their religion should be killed. When Ali was informed about this statement he agreed with Ibn Abbas' opinion. This hadith teaches us that we must follow the teachings of Prophet Muhammad and respect his words even if we do not agree with them at first glance. It also teaches us that we must think carefully before taking any action against someone as it could lead to an unjustified punishment or result in a wrong decision being made. We must also remember that Allah's punishments are only meant for Him and no one else has the right to inflict such punishments on others without His permission or guidance.
