Sunan Abi Dawud 4116 (Book 34, Hadith 97) #24406
Modesty in Dress

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) instructed Dihyah ibn Khalifah al-Kalbi to divide a piece of fine Egyptian linen into two and use one part to make a shirt for himself and the other part as a veil for his wife, while also instructing her to wear something underneath it so that her figure is not visible.

Narrated Dihyah ibn Khalifah al-Kalbi: The Messenger of Allah was brought some pieces of fine Egyptian linen and he gave me one and said: Divide it into two; cut one of the pieces into a shirt and give the other to your wife for veil. Then when he turned away, he said: And order your wife to wear a garment below it and not show her figure. Abu Dawud said: Yahya b. Ayyub transmitted it and said: 'Abbas b. 'Ubaid Allah b. 'Abbas

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of modesty in dress. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) instructed Dihyah ibn Khalifah al-Kalbi to divide a piece of fine Egyptian linen into two parts, one for himself and the other for his wife. He then instructed him to tell his wife to wear something underneath it so that her figure is not visible. This hadith teaches us that modesty should be observed when dressing up, both by men and women alike. It also emphasizes on covering up our bodies from others’ view, which is an important Islamic value. Furthermore, this hadith encourages us to practice moderation when it comes to clothing; we should neither go overboard with our clothing nor be too scanty with them either.
