Veiling From Slaves

SUMMARY: A woman should veil herself from her slave if she has the means to purchase his freedom.

Narrated Umm Salamah, Ummul Mu'minin: The Messenger of Allah said to us: If one of you has a slave, and he enters into an agreement to purchase his freedom, and can pay the full price, she must veil herself from him.

QUICK LESSONS:
Treat your slaves with respect & dignity; Strive for justice & fairness; Be mindful of your actions & how they may affect others around you; Buy the freedom of your slaves if you have the means to do so.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a woman's responsibility towards her slave if she has the means to purchase his freedom. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ instructed that if a woman has a slave and can afford to buy their freedom, then she must veil herself from them. This is an important teaching as it shows us that even though slavery was allowed in Islam, it was not encouraged and Muslims were expected to treat slaves with respect and dignity. Furthermore, this hadith teaches us that we should be mindful of our actions and how they may affect others around us. We should always strive for justice and fairness in all our dealings with others regardless of their social status or position in society.
