Sunan Abi Dawud 3822 (Book 28, Hadith 87) #24112
Avoiding Garlic and Onion in the Mosque

SUMMARY: Eating garlic and onion is discouraged, and one should not bring food with a strong smell to the mosque.

Jabir b. 'Abd Allah reported the Messenger of Allah as sayings: He who eats garlic or onion must keep away from us. Or he said: must keep away from our mosque or must sit in his house. A dish containing green vegetables was brought to him, and noticing that it had an odour he asked (about it). He was told that it contained some vegetables. He then said: Bring it near, to one of his companion who was with him. When he saw it, he abominated eating it, and said: eat for I hold intimate converse with one with whom you do not. Ahmad b. Salih said: Ibn Wahb explained the word badr as meaning dish.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that it is important to be mindful of our actions when we are in a place of worship. The Prophet Muhammad discouraged eating garlic or onion before entering a mosque, as these foods have strong odors that can be unpleasant for others. He also advised against bringing food with strong smells into the mosque, as this could be distracting for those who are trying to focus on their prayers. Additionally, he showed respect for his companions by asking them not to eat something he found distasteful himself. This hadith teaches us about being considerate of others in places of worship and respecting their feelings even if we do not share them.
