Blessing of Food Through Ablution

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught that the blessing of food consists in ablution before and after eating.

Narrated Salman al-Farsi: I read in the Torah that the blessing of food consists in ablution before it. So I mentioned it to the Prophet . He said: The blessing of food consists in ablution before it and ablution after it. Sufyan disapproved of performing ablution before taking food. Abu Dawud said: It is weak.
حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، حَدَّثَنَا قَيْسٌ، عَنْ أَبِي هَاشِمٍ، عَنْ زَاذَانَ، عَنْ سَلْمَانَ، قَالَ قَرَأْتُ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ أَنَّ بَرَكَةَ الطَّعَامِ الْوُضُوءُ قَبْلَهُ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ فَقَالَ ‏ "‏ بَرَكَةُ الطَّعَامِ الْوُضُوءُ قَبْلَهُ وَالْوُضُوءُ بَعْدَهُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ وَكَانَ سُفْيَانُ يَكْرَهُ الْوُضُوءَ قَبْلَ الطَّعَامِ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of performing ablutions before and after eating. It was narrated by Salman al-Farsi who read in the Torah that the blessing of food consists in ablution before it. He then mentioned this to the Prophet (ﷺ), who said that not only should one perform ablutions before eating but also afterwards. Sufyan disapproved of performing ablutions before taking food, however Abu Dawud said it was weak. This hadith teaches us to be mindful when we eat and to take care to perform wudu beforehand as a way to receive blessings from Allah for our meals. It is important for us to remember this so we can benefit from these blessings and be thankful for all that Allah has provided us with.
