Sunan Abi Dawud 3752 (Book 28, Hadith 17) #24042
Accepting Hospitality as a Guest

SUMMARY: If you are a guest, accept hospitality if it is offered to you, but if not, take what is fitting for them to give.

'Uqbah b. 'Amir said: we said: Messenger of Allah! You send us out and we come to people who do not give hospitality, so what is your opinion? The Messenger of Allah said: If you come to people who order for you what is fitting for a guest, accept it; but if they do not, take from them what is fitting for them to give to a guest. Abu Dawud said: And this is an authority for a man to take a thing if it is due to him.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respectfully accepting an offer of hospitality when given by someone else; Taking only what one deserves when no offer has been made; Being honest and fair in all dealings with others; Treating guests with kindness and respect .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of hospitality and how guests should be treated with respect. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that when we are invited as guests, we should accept the hospitality that is offered to us. However, if the host does not offer anything then we can take what is fitting for them to give us as a guest. This hadith also teaches us that it is permissible for someone to take something from another person if it is due to him or her. In other words, one should not be taken advantage of and must receive what they deserve in return for their services or efforts.
