Sunan Abi Dawud 3670 (Book 27, Hadith 2) #23960
Abstaining from Wine

SUMMARY: Umar asked Allah for a satisfactory explanation about wine, and Allah responded with three verses from the Quran. Umar accepted the verses and abstained from drinking wine.

When the prohibition of wine (was yet to be) declared, Umar said: O Allah, give us a satisfactory explanation about wine. So the following verse of Surat Al-Baqarah revealed; "They ask thee concerning wine and gambling. Say: In them is great sin...". Umar was then called and it was recited to him. He said: O Allah, give us a satisfactory explanation about wine. Then the following verse of Surat an-Nisa' was revealed: "O ye who believe! approach not prayers with a mind befogged...". Thereafter the herald of the Messenger of Allah would call when the (congregational) prayer was performed: Beware, one who is drunk should not come to prayer. Umar was again called and it was recited to him). He said: O Allah, give us a satisfactory explanation about wine. This verse was revealed: "Will ye not then abstain?" Umar said: We abstained.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the prohibition of wine in Islam. It tells us how Umar ibn al Khattab asked Allah for a satisfactory explanation about why drinking wine was prohibited. In response to his request, three verses were revealed in the Quran that explained why it was forbidden. The first verse was from Surat Al Baqarah which said that there is great sin in drinking wine and gambling. The second verse was from Surat An Nisa’ which said not to approach prayer while drunk or befogged by alcohol or drugs. The third verse was also from sura An Nisa’ which simply stated “Will ye not then abstain?” After hearing these verses, Umar accepted them and agreed to abstain from drinking wine himself as well as encouraging others to do so too by having a herald call out when congregational prayer began that those who were drunk should not come near it. This hadith teaches us that we should obey Allah's commands without question and accept His wisdom even if we don't understand it fully at first because He knows what is best for us in this life and the next one too!
