Sahih al-Bukhari 2466 (Book 46, Hadith 27) #2361
Serving Animals as Worship

SUMMARY: Serving animals is a form of worship that Allah rewards.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "A man felt very thirsty while he was on the way, there he came across a well. He went down the well, quenched his thirst and came out. Meanwhile he saw a dog panting and licking mud because of excessive thirst. He said to himself, "This dog is suffering from thirst as I did". So, he went down the well again and filled his shoe with water and watered it. Allah thanked him for that deed and forgave him. The people said, "O Allah's Messenger ! Is there a reward for us in serving the animals?" He replied: "Yes, there is a reward for serving any animate (living being)".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be kind towards all living creatures

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith, narrated by Abu Huraira, speaks about the importance of serving animals. It tells the story of a man who was travelling and became very thirsty. He found a well and quenched his thirst, but then noticed a dog panting and licking mud due to its own thirst. The man felt compassion for the animal and went back down to the well to fill his shoe with water so he could give it to the dog. Allah thanked him for this act of kindness and forgave him for any wrongdoings he may have committed in his life. The people asked if there was any reward in serving animals, and Prophet Muhammad ﷺ replied that there is indeed reward in serving any living being. This hadith teaches us that we should be kind towards all living creatures, as it is an act of worship that Allah rewards us for doing so. We should also remember that even small acts can make a difference in someone else's life - just like how one simple act of kindness from this man saved an animal's life!
